Green Technology Patents Dominate GM 2009 Filings

Warren, Mich. – More than half of the 1,300 patents filed by General Motors Co. in 2009 are green innovations, proof of the rapid development of groundbreaking technology by GM researchers and engineers.

“The move toward electrification is requiring us to reinvent the DNA of the automobile, requiring massive amounts of innovation,” said Alan Taub, vice president of GM Global research and Development.  “There’s almost no component on the vehicle that is not being reinvented.  As a result, our green patent portfolio is helping us achieve world-class technological breakthroughs in the energy and environmental space.”

A study of the patent activity of the top-15 global automakers released by the Intellectual Capital Merchant Banc™ firm Ocean Tomo, LLC (www.OceanTomo.com ), hailed GM’s leadership in the development of green technologies.

“Green automotive technologies are the building blocks for creating and improving alternative power plants and increasing fuel efficiency,” said James E. Malackowski, CEO of Ocean Tomo LLC. “GM has higher average quality and newer green technology and patents than the other 14 automakers combined.”

Among the most notable was the development of a new catalyst material for the purification of exhaust from diesel or other lean-burning engines.  Traditional catalysts use platinum – a precious metal subject to wide price variations – but a team of GM researchers discovered the material perovskite can provide performance equal to platinum at a much lower cost.  This innovation could help to reduce the cost of diesel and other lean-burning engine technology in the future, while also keeping them safe for the environment.

Another breakthrough came in the form of a new device that uses a material called shape memory alloy (SMA), which changes shape when it is heated.  GM researchers are developing ways to use the material to build a recovery device that would convert waste heat from a vehicle’s engine into electricity to power auxiliary equipment, such as the radio or interior accent lighting.  This technology could help to further improve the fuel economy of tomorrow’s vehicles, while also making next-generation hybrids more efficient.

We have begun of experimental research in the beginning of 90s. On the first stage, we had the simple purpose to increase the engine power by creation of optimum exhaust system. It was a primitive direction of researches of the race car mufflers. But as a result of experiments were revealed a number of the inexplicable phenomena, which did not give in to the analysis from a level of knowledge of classical thermodynamics. It became clear, that the Carnot cycle obviously does not answer to these phenomena. The thermal analysis of the phenomena specified it as a new thermodynamic cycle, as mode of work of the engine. But in those years, technical complexities of experiment, absence of the necessary research equipment, and the complexities with steady auto modeling setting have not allowed precisely to establish a physical nature of the new thermodynamic phenomenon. But in this time, in 1994, we have submitted the patent application, which described these phenomena as a prospective new thermodynamic cycle.
Only at the end of 1998, we casually have found the new technical device of the engine, which gave a steady auto modeling mode in a wide range of rotation of the engine. The new experimental engine has allowed in 1999-2000 years to find real parameters of a new thermodynamic cycle and to understand in effect of difficult physical phenomenon. In this time we had the complete physical data and had mathematical model of process. On the basis of these data we have submitted the patent application, which precisely described the given physical phenomenon as a new thermodynamic cycle.
Explaining simply, it’s possible to tell so. Everyone knows that any gas or pairs at the certain ratio of pressure, temperature in the any closed volume can pass in other condition, in to liquid. The point of this transition is a point of dew. It’s known well from school physics. So, the engine exhaust gases have the point of dew too. And if these gases to cool up to this point, they drop out in a liquid, or pass through phase transition “gas – liquid”. It’s the theory: working engine produce gases, after that gas have a cooling, then turn to a liquid and leave in a drainage. It means, working engine doesn’t make any emissions of gases in to atmosphere. Absolutely clean circuit.
It’s necessary to note, that basic working device of Adelshin Engine™ is a vortex muffler. Which looks as a simple car muffler, has the same sizes, but moreover, stand on the same bolts, as standard muffler. Any other technical improvements it’s not necessary. Thus, this so simple technical way, that at all does not require for replacement some special equipment or special preparation.
Taking into account all of it, we can competently to say, that the Global problem of a Climate Change is so simple, just is necessary to turn off some bolts from the old muffler, to send it to the dump, and to put on its place a new vortex muffler of Adelshin Engine™.
